The current conflict has brought about an unprecedented growth in the number of refusers and a fundamental change in their political identity. Before the war, draft refusers were a small, primarily anti-Zionist, anti-colonial group, often branded as "traitors" by the mainstream. The debate was focused on a fringe phenomenon.
This situation has changed dramatically. Reserve soldiers began publishing refusal letters in quick succession: refusing to enter Rafah, refusing to serve at the Sde Teiman military camp, refusing to continue until a hostage deal is secured, and refusing due to violations of previous ceasefire agreements. For soldiers in mandatory service, a refusal letter was published with over 100 designated conscripts announcing their intent to refuse, and we are receiving an increasing number of inquiries from active soldiers, even combat troops, seeking help in refusing deployment to Gaza.
Refusal is no longer a fringe phenomenon; it has entered the mainstream . We now see individuals identified with the Zionist-Left coming to the Mesarvot network, seeking assistance to avoid what they perceive as a moral crisis and involvement in war crimes.

The crisis is visible in the military itself. The military prison system has been forced to add three new companies to house a surge of wartime deserters, reservists, and the new influx of Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) refusers choosing prison over participation. Our work involves direct action against systemic injustice: following our appeal in collaboration with the Public Committee Against Torture, abusive practices used against refusers who refuse to wear uniforms are being re-examined in the military prison, with wardens who engaged in them potentially facing prosecution. This abuse included, among other things, holding handcuffed refusers in their cells for long hours a day, not allowing them to change clothes (to non-IDF clothes), and denying rights to phone calls and yard time.
We in the Mesarvot network support all who refuse . This includes not only the general genocide refusers but also the selective refusers who object only to war crimes or the occupation of Gaza, and those who have served until now but whose conscience demands an immediate halt. We stand with the Haredi refusers who feel that participation in the war is religiously forbidden to them. The willingness of these individuals, secular and ultra-Orthodox alike, to bear punishment for their beliefs and principles is a powerful moral statement at this critical time. The legal, political, and emotional support we provide is essential for the continued existence of the conscientious objection movement.
