We are really happy to share that two of our proposed projects have been
accepted for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2025!
GSoC is a global program organized by Google that helps bring new
contributors into the world of free and open source software. This year,
Google granted funding for five projects under the Freifunk umbrella, and
two of them will directly contribute to the growth and sustainability of
the LibreMesh ecosystem. Special thanks for Andi and Bluse-Blue Freifunk
gsoc Org Admins.
In March, we published a set of ideas that align with key challenges for
libremesh, and began working closely with interested applicants. We’re
proud of the constructive discussions that took place on our communication
channels, and even more proud of the dedication and enthusiasm shown by the
applicants.
We had lots of applications so we went through a careful review process,
several strong proposals were left out due to the limited number of slots
which makes me very sad, but I hope we can push them forward next year.
This year selected projects are:
*Adding Wi-Fi support to QEMU simulation for LibreMesh*
student: Victor Spehar
Mentor: Javier
This project will enhance LibreMesh’s ability to simulate mesh networks
using QEMU, by introducing support for Wi-Fi interfaces.
*Simplifying LibreMesh*
student: Agustín del Valle
Mentors: Ilario and Javier
This project aims to take libremesh a bit closer to openwrt and improve
maintainability.
We’re truly happy to have these two bright contributors joining our
community and taking on such important challenges.
Again special thanks go to the Freifunk organization for supporting
LibreMesh within GSoC once again. Also special thanks to all the people who
took the time to apply and those who contacted us privately but couldn't
make it this year.
To those not selected: please don’t be discouraged. We hope you are able to
continue contributing to LibreMesh or related projects. There's always work
to be done to support mesh communities worldwide and every contribution is
welcome. Also we hope to see you in the next gsoc.
We might start with the onboarding on Wednesday 14:00 UTC (11:00 arg /
16:00 cest) so stay tuned and if possible join us and share your
experience.
Saludos
