The thing is, in Gnome-Shell, there is no such thing as a "system tray
area". So until we move to real app with dbus backend + Gnome extension,
you need to use an extension that will display the content of the "systray".

In Tails, TopIcon+ is used, which is available in Debian and should be
in Ubuntu as well.

When the applet is running, enabling such an extension should make it
visible (and possible to interact with).
