hmm, ok. I'm thinking about it...

Maybe a script that extracts the msgids (sed/awk?), then list the words
line by line (tr " " "\n" | tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]' | sort -u), and
then manually extract important words (maybe | grep -vf blacklist). But
we'd basically do a word-by-word translation which by design is somehow
limited (needless to say that natural language translation is still a
research topic...).

Experiences from other translation teams?
