Cycom, an association of urban cyclists at Rome's Food and Agriculture
Organization has accused the city of breaking its own law that
requires the creation of a cycling lane every time a new road is
created or an existing one is upgraded.
The group, which promotes the development of sustainable transport in
the capital and is made up of 300 mostly-foreign members, has used the
occasion of European Mobility Week (16-22 September) to take action
against the city.
In an open letter to the administration of Roma Capitale published on
Cycom's blog, spokesman Francesco Calderini writes that the group has
lodged a formal complaint against Roma Capitale with Rome's public
prosecutor. Calderini describes how for three years the group has
complained that the city has not been implementing Article 366 of the
1998 Highway Code, in relation to the development of cycling lanes in
the city.
Voicing support for Cycom's calls, Paolo Bellino of the action group
of cyclists and pedestrians Traffico si Muore (Traffic kills) said "We
are trying to make the city understand that traffic levels have
reached crisis point and the only way to avoid situations like those
occurring in the world's most congested cities, like Cairo and Mexico,
is to rely on bicycles and public transport, like in northern Europe."
