Dear Friends,
We are in the early stages of organising a bicycle
ride from London to Jerusalem, to raise awareness of the Israeli
occupation, and show support for the Palestinian people.
The ride will start in London (probably Trafalgar Square) on either 7th or
14th August 2004. The start will hopefully coincide
with a big rally for Palestine.
The cyclists will ride to Paris to be joined with
other cyclists from
Scandinavia and the ride will proceed through
Switzerland, Italy and Greece,
with cyclists joining from neighbouring countries en
route.
The ferry will be taken from Greece (Piraeus) into Haifa,
and they will then ride into
Jerusalem. We will organise media events at each major
town or city, to
publicise the truths of the occupation. We hope that
over a hundred (at least) cyclists will ride into Jerusalem on 28th
September 2004 - the date
to coincide with the anniversary of the start of the
Al-Aqsa Intifada.
We anticipate that the Israeli authorities may deny
them entry into the
country, but that would probably bring more publicity
to the event so would not necessarily be a problem.
All cyclists will wear a T-shirt displaying a truth of
the occupation.
What we need now:
Sponsorship -
we are trying to contact Mecca cola in
Paris to request sponsorship - the cyclists will display the name of
the sponsor on their
T-shirts, the sponsor is likely to get a lot of
publicity. If you know of anyone who may be interested
in sponsoring the ride, please let us know.
Organisers - we have the London-Paris section covered,
but need an organiser
for each country, to arrange accommodation, food,
media, plus a support
vehicle for the route through that country. Can you
put us in touch with
anyone in those European countries who could help?
(France/Switzerland/Italy/Greece).
Cyclists - we will recruit them though Palestine
Solidarity Campaign groups,
as well as circulating details to all cyclists groups
and clubs, but the
word needs spreading as far as possible.
We may have a film made of the event and have been put
in touch with someone
who may be able to do this.
If your organisation is able to help or support us in
any way, it will be
greatly appreciated. This should be a big media event
in support of the
rights of Palestinians. The more people involved, the
bigger it will grow.
If anyone wants more information, they should contact
me at ThePeaceCycle@???
I look forward to hearing from you.
