of Greece demonstrated against the presence of the NATO Standing Naval
Force of Mediterranean (STANAVFORMED) in their city. The fleet is
composed by vessels, from US, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and
Italy.<br>

demonstrations take place during the last two days in the port of
Kalamata, located at the south of Greece. The reason is that three
NATO ships, from Italy, have reached the port of Kalamata, heading for
east Mediterranean.<br>

the local committee of EEDYE, the demonstrators&nbsp;wrote anti-war

to the new NATO port!</b><br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite>The local society of Nea Peramos in
Northern Greece is upset after the recent revelations that the
government plans to turn their town into a NATO port. Yesterday, the
people of Nea Peramos declared once more their opposition to these
plans, with a big demonstration. The demonstrators marched holding
black flags and shouting slogans like ³We want schools-not war
ports², ³We do not want to live with uranium² etc. The
demonstration was called by the Coordination Committee that unites
almost all the local society. Thousands of residents have already
undersigned a protest to the government, while the Prefecture Council
with an unanimous resolution asks the government to ³freeze² the
process of construction of the NATO port.<br>

base!</b><br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite>The committees of EEDYE of western Greece
and the Coordination Secretariat of the anti-war movement of
North-west Greece call for a big demonstration and siege of the NATO
base of Action on Sunday, February 23. They demand the base to be shut
down and that our country does not participate in the imperialist war
in any way. The air base of Action is a major base for the AWACS spy
planes of NATO.<br>

</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>Until today, 22 federations and labor
centers have already endorsed the proposal of the secretariat of PAME
and demand that the leadership of the General Confederation of Greek
Workers (GSEE) declares a 24hours strike on the first day the war
erupts. More federations, labor centers and unions are expected to
back the proposal in the next days.</blockquote>
